Refresh Your Ottawa Home Before the Holidays: An Interior Painting Guide

Make the rooms you share with guests feel welcoming, without turning the holiday season into a whole-house renovation.

By Ottawa All Painting ·

Hosting a holiday dinner or welcoming overnight guests can make you notice the scuffed entryway, tired dining-room walls or spare bedroom you have been meaning to refresh. A focused interior repaint can help your Ottawa home feel ready for company, while still leaving time for everything else on your list.

The key is to choose a realistic scope and work backward from the date you need each room available. Painting should be finished with enough time for ventilation, drying and a careful return to normal use—not squeezed in the evening before guests arrive.

1. Start With the Rooms Your Guests Will Use

Walk through your home as a visitor would: the front entrance, hallway, living room, dining area and guest bedroom. Pick the spaces where a repaint would make the most noticeable difference. An entryway with worn trim may be a better priority than a rarely used room.

In an open-plan home, consider connected walls and sightlines rather than treating the dining area as a separate room. Confirm whether the estimate includes ceilings, doors and baseboards. Our interior painting services in Ottawa can help you define a manageable project before you book.

2. Plan Backward From Your Hosting Date

Share your actual deadline when requesting an estimate, including when furniture must be back in place. The schedule needs to allow for repairs, preparation, coats, recoat intervals and cleanup, followed by the product-specific drying and curing requirements.

Dry to the touch is not the same as fully cured. Ask when you can move furniture against walls, clean the finish or hang decorations. There is no single waiting period that fits every paint and room condition. Avoid relying on a last-minute booking; availability and completion dates must be confirmed for your particular project.

3. Choose Colours That Work Beyond the Holidays

Let your year-round furniture, flooring and lighting guide the palette rather than matching seasonal decorations. A warm neutral, soft white or muted colour can provide a flexible background, but the right choice depends on the room and its existing finishes.

View samples in daylight and under the lamps you use when entertaining. Ottawa's shorter winter days can make evening lighting especially important. For rooms that feel cool or dim, read our guide to choosing paint colours for north-facing rooms before settling on a shade.

4. Keep Cold-Weather Painting Conditions in Mind

Heated interiors can be painted during winter, but fresh-air ventilation and suitable air and surface temperatures still matter. Follow the chosen coating's label and safety guidance during application and afterward. Low odour does not mean ventilation is unnecessary.

Discuss how the work will affect children, pets and anyone sensitive to paint emissions, especially if a guest room is part of the project. Our winter interior painting guide covers ventilation, temperature and drying considerations in more detail.

5. Prepare Before the Decorations Go Up

Clear artwork, fragile items and seasonal decorations from the work area. Agree with your painter on who moves furniture, protects floors and handles wall repairs. Keep a route available through the house so painting does not block everyday essentials.

Resist hanging wreaths, garlands or adhesive hooks on freshly painted surfaces until the coating has cured sufficiently and the paint and hanging-product instructions permit it. Even removable adhesives can damage a finish that is not ready. See our interior painting preparation checklist for more ways to get ready.

Your Pre-Holiday Painting Checklist

  • Choose the rooms and surfaces that matter most for hosting.
  • Confirm the scope, quote and schedule before making plans around the work.
  • Approve colours in the room's daytime and evening light.
  • Allow time for repairs, painting, ventilation and product-specific drying and curing.
  • Remove decorations and valuables before preparation begins.
  • Confirm when furniture, guests and decorations can safely return.

If the deadline is too close for the full project, reduce the scope or schedule the remaining rooms after the holidays. A carefully finished room is a better result than rushing an entire floor.
