From Wood to Light Grey: A Kitchen Cabinet Painting Transformation in Stittsville

A real before-and-after example of how a different cabinet colour changes the look of a kitchen.

By Ottawa All Painting ·

Kitchen cabinets cover a large part of what you see when you walk into the room. This Stittsville project shows the difference between natural wood cabinetry and a light grey painted finish, with dark countertops and a warm tiled backsplash providing a familiar backdrop.

The Kitchen Before and After

After: Light grey cabinets with black handles.

The photos were taken from different angles and under different lighting conditions. Use them to compare the overall look, not as an exact paint-colour reference.

Before: Natural Wood and Warm Tones

In the before photo, the wood doors and drawer fronts give the kitchen a warm, golden appearance. The cabinetry extends around the room and includes tall storage, upper cupboards and a glass-front display section. With so much cabinet surface visible, the wood tone plays a major role in the kitchen's colour palette.

Natural wood can be an attractive choice in its own right. Painting is not about declaring one finish better than another; it is about deciding whether a different look would suit your home and the way you want the room to feel.

After: Light Grey Cabinets and Dark Accents

In the finished photo, light grey cabinet faces create a more neutral backdrop. The door profiles remain a visible design feature, while the dark handles stand out against the lighter finish. The dark countertops anchor the room, and the tiled backsplash adds warmth beside the grey cabinetry.

These photos also show differences in lighting, hardware and some fixtures and appliances. The cabinet colour is an important part of the transformation, but the overall change should not be attributed to paint alone.

Choosing Cabinet Colours Around Existing Countertops

If you plan to keep your countertops and backsplash, start your colour selection there. Dark stone can contain several colours, and a beige or tan backsplash can make a cool grey appear bluer than expected. Look at these fixed surfaces together before choosing a cabinet shade.

  • Check undertones: Compare a few greys, warm neutrals and off-whites beside your countertop and tile.
  • Use a larger sample: A small colour chip is useful for narrowing the options, but a sample board gives a clearer impression.
  • Test different lighting: View samples in daylight and under the lights you use in the evening.
  • Include hardware: Hold a handle or knob beside the sample to check contrast and the overall combination.

A photograph on a screen cannot reliably identify a paint colour or product. Choose your final shade from physical samples in your own kitchen rather than trying to match this image exactly.

Is Cabinet Painting Right for Your Kitchen?

Before choosing colours, assess the cabinets themselves. Painting may be worth considering when the layout works and the cabinet boxes and doors are in suitable condition. Loose joints, damaged surfaces, peeling finishes or moisture damage need assessment before a coating system is selected.

Preparation, primer compatibility, the chosen cabinet coating and its curing requirements all affect the result. Ask what your estimate includes and how to care for the finish when the kitchen returns to use. For a broader comparison of your options, read our cabinet refinishing versus replacement guide.

Planning Your Own Stittsville Cabinet Refresh

Start with photos of your kitchen, a list of the cabinets you want painted and any concerns about their condition. Include the island, exposed end panels, trim and glass-front sections when discussing the scope so the quote reflects the complete project.
